A Urologist's Journey by Bapat Sharad

Dr Sharad Bapat is the seniormost Urologist from Mumbai. In the decades of 50s and 60s, when medicos went to U.K. to appear for FRCS, Dr Bapat had no time to waste on the much-coveted degree. With remarkable clarity, he followed his instinct to learn Urology, a challenging subspeciality in surgery, at a nascent stage then, which was rapidly carving a niche for itself. Indeed, even in U.K. in those days, there was no separate qualification for Urology. Dr Sharad Bapat therefore, was among the pioneers, who went on to establish the Department of Urology at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College, in Mumbai. Born in pre independence era, Dr Bapat spent part of his childhood in Lahore (now in Pakistan,) among the other various towns of Satara, Pune and Ahmedabad. He gives a charming account of the pre-partition Lahore, which the majority Hindu families considered their own city. In this autobiography, he creates beautiful profiles of his contemporaries and seniors, some of them being the legendary medical professionals of that era. Dr Bapat's language has the same forthrightness as he may wield a scalpel with, and an engaging style.
